I was down in Fallbrook, California last week, visiting my partner in crime, Amy Boring. While I was there, she asked me if I wanted to go visit our mutual friend Skye Hardwick, who happened to be teaching one of her signature “Sweet Light Collective” photography workshops. Though I have been a long time admirer of Skye’s brilliant work and an online friend of hers for years, I had never met her in person. Amy’s niece, the talented Samantha Taylor, was one of the models in the workshop, so I tagged along as we stopped in for a visit. To be honest, I was a little nervous. I didn’t have my “real” camera with me and I was a bit hesitant to just walk in on a workshop in progress. But Skye was a delight and welcomed my visit, and I used what I had to grab a few quick snaps, my iPhone. As I mentioned in a previous post, it’s not about the camera. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the importance of the right equipment for the job and getting the technical details down in photography is critical to good work, but it cannot replace good light, good models and a good setting, all of which were in abundance here. Enjoy the images, they were fun to shoot and made me want to shoot more editorial work and connect with professional models. Are you a model who needs photos? Call me. I want to make you look beautiful. I’ll bring my “real” camera and my A-game. And I might bring my iPhone too, what the heck. I like a challenge. And I LOVE Sweet Light!
“I hate cameras. They interfere, they’re always in the way. I wish: if I could just work with my eyes alone.”
